What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a prescription medication that is used for weight loss and weight management. It contains an active ingredient called semaglutide.[1] Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue, meaning that it mimics the naturally-occuring GLP-1 hormone to stabilise blood sugar levels, stimulate satiety and in turn, encourage weight loss.[2]

Wegovy is most effective when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity.

How Wegovy works

Juniper’s clinically proven treatment programme with Wegovy targets the body’s metabolic patterns, helping patients to lose weight and keep it off long-term.
Wegovy is a medication that encourages weight loss by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone. This hormone works to reduce cravings, make you feel fuller for longer, stablise your blood sugar and promote metabolic efficiency.[1,3]

The active ingredient in Wegovy, called semaglutide (which is the same ingredient as Ozempic), which has been proven to help patients lose 15% of their body weight over one year.

Reduces cravings. Targets the reward centre of the brain, which helps limit cravings[3]
Keeps you feeling satiated. Slows down stomach emptying, making you feel fuller for longer[3]
Stabilises blood sugar. Increases insulin production and improves the way the body  processes fat and manages nutrients[1]
Helps to quiet food noise. Decreases hunger signals, causing a reduction in mental food chatter
Promotes metabolic efficiency. Reduces glucose production and modifies the way the liver stores nutrients

How much weight can I lose with Wegovy?

People on Wegovy can lose up to 15% of their body weight over 12 months.

A study from 2021 followed 1,961 adults living with obesity or overweight with a related medical problem, and were randomly assigned the GLP-1 injections or a placebo.

After 68 weeks, those taking the GLP-1 lost an average of 15.3kg, whereas the placebo group lost an average of 2.6kg.[3]

Wegovy vs Mounjaro for weight loss

Another notable weight loss injection is Mounjaro. While it is frequently compared to Wegovy, some significant differences exist between these two medications.

Wegovy functions as a GLP-1 agonist, which means it mimics the action of the GLP-1 hormone that is naturally released after eating. This mechanism helps to increase feelings of fullness and reduce appetite, leading to decreased food intake and effective weight loss. In contrast, Mounjaro targets GLP-1 receptors and also activates GIP receptors, enhancing its weight loss effects through a dual-action approach.

In clinical trials, people on Wegovy achieved an average weight loss of about 15% over 12 months. This outcome showcases Wegovy's efficacy as a standalone treatment for obesity.

Although there are currently no direct head-to-head trials published comparing these two medications, the existing clinical data suggests that both Wegovy and Mounjaro can effectively support weight management goals. Ultimately, anyone considering these treatments should consult with a healthcare professional to determine which option aligns best with their needs and health profiles.

What is the dosing schedule for Wegovy?
Wegovy pens come in 5 dose strengths, each in a different colour pen — you work your way from green to pink, brown, blue and end at black.

You gradually increase your dose every 4 weeks, but you don’t necessarily have to increase to the highest dose — some people don’t tolerate the 2.4 mg dose very well.

Your prescriber will advise you on increasing your dose and what strength is best for your maintenance dose.

For most Juniper patients, injecting their own medication is a brand new experience and it’s completely normal to feel nervous or even a little scared.

In this video, we’ll go through the steps together so you feel comfortable and confident administering your medication.

Step 1: Choose a time to inject.

It doesn’t matter what time of the day you choose, as long as you can commit to injecting your medication at roughly this time on the same day every week.

Step 2: Remove your pen from the fridge.

We recommend waiting a few minutes to let the pen come to room temperature before continuing. This helps reduce the chance of irritation and bruising.

Step 3: While you wait for your pen to come to room temperature, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and get a new needle ready.

Don’t forget to keep your sharps bin nearby. You must use a new needle every time you inject.

Step 4: Once your pen is ready, remove the cap, then remove the new needle and screw it onto the front of the pen.

You’ll notice how tiny the needle is.

Preparing a new pen

If it’s your first time injecting or you’re using a new pen, you’ll need to start by preparing it and here’s how.

First, check that the medication inside the pen is clear and colorless. If you notice that it’s cloudy or coloured, it’s best not to use it.

With the needle pointed upwards, twist the end of your pen until the dose counter shows the flow check symbol.

Press and hold the button at the end of your pen until the dose counter shows 0.

A drop of medication, or sometimes more, will appear at the needle tip and this indicates that your pen is now ready for use.

If no drop appears, repeat the process. If still no drop appears after six tries, this may mean you have a damaged needle and will need to use a different one.

The dose counter located on the side of the pen will always start at 0mg.

Twist the end of the pen until the desired dose. If this is your first injection, your dose will be 0.25mg.

Step 6: Choose your injection site.

This can be one of three areas on your body: your upper arm, your stomach or your upper thigh. We recommend rotating your injectionn site weekly.

Step 7: Once you’ve chosen your injection site, pinch the skin to create a slight fold. This ensures you’re injecting into fatty tissue and not muscle.

Then when you’re ready, gently insert the needle into the skin at a 90 degree angle. Most patients find this relatively painless.

Click and hold the button at the back of the pen to release the medication. After the dose counter reaches zero, count for 6 seconds and slowly remove the needle from the skin.

Step 8: Once you finish using your medication, you will just need to unscrew the needle from the pen and pop it in your sharps bin.

Your pen will then automatically reseal once the needle is removed.

Finally, replace the cap on your pen to protect it from light, and return it to the fridge.

We understand injecting takes some getting used to, so we encourage you to take your time and rewatch this video as many times as you need.

Eventually, your injections will become just another part of your routine – many patients find it only takes a few tries to get the hang of it.

What are the most common side effects of Wegovy?

Like all prescription medications, Wegovy may cause side effects for some people — it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong, it’s simply your body adjusting to the medication.

The most common side effects are usually gastrointestinal (GI) related, namely nausea and vomiting.[3]

These mild side effects are generally most noticeable right after an injection, and can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. But, the good news is that these should subside as your body becomes used to the weight loss medication.

Juniper's medical team can work with you to adjust your dose or  adopt other interventions to manage side effects.

The most common Wegovy side effects include[3]:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach (abdomen) pain
  • Headache
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Upset stomach
  • Dizziness
  • Bloating
  • Burping
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea

What are the severe side effects of Wegovy?

While there are a number severe side effects associated with Wegovy, these do tend to be rarer. If you experience any of the below symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider.

The severe side effects can include:

  • Possible thyroid tumours, including cancer
  • Inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Kidney problems
  • Allergic reactionsIncreased heart rate
  • Depression
  • Changes in vision for people with type 2 diabetes

If you experience a severe rash, swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat; a very rapid heartbeat or trouble breathing or swallowing, please seek immediate medical attention.

How to manage Wegovy side effects

There are a few ways to manage the mild side effects of Wegovy, like nausea.

For starters, try eating bland, low-fat foods like crackers, toast and rice as well as foods that contain water, like soups. When it comes to mealtimes, try to eat slowly and avoid lying down after you eat.[4]

Be sure to contact your healthcare provider if you are experiencing side effects and they’ll be able to advice you on how to treat this.

Is Wegovy available via the NHS?

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended Wegovy for use within the NHS in England for weight management in adults, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. To be eligible, you must have at least one weight-related comorbidity and a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35.

However, the MHRA’s marketing authorisation allows for a broader range of eligibility through private providers like Juniper. This includes individuals with a BMI of 27 or above if they have a weight-related health condition, or a BMI of 30 or above without any additional conditions.

Who shouldn’t use Wegovy?

Wegovy isn’t suitable for everyone and there are a few medical conditions that also exclude you from using this medication.

Do not use Wegovy if:

  • You or a family member have ever had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or if you have an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) [3]
  • You have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of the ingredients in Wegovy
  • If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding[3]
