What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a medication that encourages weight loss through the combined action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) agonists.

These hormones work to reduce cravings, make you feel fuller for longer and improve blood sugar levels while also aiding fat loss and preventing fat gain. [1]

The active ingredient in Mounjaro, called tirzepatide, is the first dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist and, according to clinical trials, is the most effective weight loss treatment currently available, with an average of 20.9% body weight loss. [2][3]

How much weight can I lose with Mounjaro?

The weight loss outcomes experienced in clinical trials of Mounjaro are impressive.

A 2022 study of over 2,500 people found that those using GLP-1/GIP treatment lost up to 20.9% body weight after 72 weeks.[4]

Mounjaro vs Wegovy for weight loss

Another weight loss injection you’re probably familiar with is Wegovy. And, while it’s often compared to Mounjaro, there are clear differences between these weight loss medications.

While Mounjaro contains the GLP-1 and GIP hormones, Wegovy mimics just the GLP-1 agonist and as a result, the weight loss outcomes differ between the medications. Mounjaro also tends to have fewer side effects for users when compared to Wegovy.

There are currently no published head-to-head trials directly comparing the weight loss medications, but when looking at the respective clinical trials, patients using GLP-1 and GIP treatment achieved 20.9% body weight loss at 72 weeks versus 14.9% body weight loss at 68 weeks for those on GLP-1 treatment.

Although, it’s important to note that Wegovy still delivers excellent weight loss outcomes, but sits just slightly below Mounjaro in projected weight loss.

What is the dosing schedule for Mounjaro?
Mounjaro injections come in 6 strengths, each in a different colour pen — you work your way from grey to purple, green, pink, blue and end at orange.

You gradually increase your dose every 4 weeks, but you don’t necessarily have to increase to the highest dose if you’re experiencing success at your current strength.

Your prescriber will advise you on increasing your dose and what strength is best for your maintenance dose.

How to inject Mounjaro.

For many Juniper patients, self-injecting is a brand new experience and it's completely normal to feel nervous. In this video, we'll go through the steps together so you feel comfortable and confident administering your medication.

To prepare your injection, you’ll need the following:

  • A Mounjaro Kwikpen,
  • a Kwikpen compatible needle,
  • a swab,a sharps disposal container, and
  • a cotton wool ball or similar in case there's any spots of blood after you've injected.

Before you begin, choose a day in the week to inject. It's up to you what time of day you'd like to inject as long as you commit to injecting your medication on the same day every week.

Step 1: Remove your unused Mounjaro Kwikpen from the fridge and wash your hands with soap and water.

Step 2: Pull the pen cap straight off. Inspect the pen and the label and don’t use it if the medication name of the dose strength does not match your treatment plan, or if the pen is expired or looks damaged, or if the medication has been frozen, has any particles in it, is cloudy or discolored. The liquid should be colorless to slightly yellow. If you can't remove the pen cap, gently twist the pen cap back and forth, and then pull the pen cap straight off.

Step 3: Wipe the red inner seal of the pen with a swab.

Step 4: Select a new pen needle. Always use a new pen needle for each injection to help prevent infection and blocked needles. Pull the paper top from the outer needle shield.

Step 5: Push the cap needle straight onto the pen and twist the pen needle on until it's tight.

Step 6: Pull off the outer needle shield and keep it. This will be reused later on. Pull off the inner needle shield and dispose of the inner needle shield in your household bin.

Step 7: Slowly turn the dose knob on your Mounjaro KwikPen until you hear two clicks and the extended line is showing in the dose window. This is the prime position. It can be corrected by turning the dose knob in either direction until the prime position lines up to the dose indicator.

Step 8: Hold your pen with the needle pointing up. Tap the cartridge holder gently to collect any air bubbles at the top.

Step 9: Release some liquid by pushing the dose knob in until it stops. Then slowly count to five while holding the dose button at the end of the pen. The zero icon will then be shown in the dose window. Do not inject this liquid into your body. This step is called priming and it removes air from the cartridge and makes sure your pen is working correctly.

Your pen has been primed if the small amount of medicine comes out of the tip of the pen needle. If you do not see the medicine, then repeat the priming steps of 7-9 no more than two additional times. If you do not see medicine, then change the pen needle and repeat the steps no more than one additional time. If you still do not see the medicine, send us an email at hello@myjuniper.co.uk.

Step 10: Choose an injection site:

  • back of your upper arm,
  • the upper thigh, or
  • the stomach.

You can inject the medicine in your thigh or stomach at least five centimeters from the belly button. If you choose to inject in the back of your upper arm, another person should administer the injection.

Make sure you change your injection site each week. You may use the same area of your body, but be sure to choose a different injection site in that area to avoid irritation.

Do not inject into an area where the skin is tender, bruised, red, or hard. And avoid injecting in areas with scars or stretchmarks as this can cause discomfort and may prevent the medication from working effectively.

To demonstrate, I'm administering Mounjaro into an injection pad, which is commonly used for medical training. But for you, please choose either the back of the upper arm, upper thigh or stomach.

Step 11: Turn the dose knob until it stops and the “1” icon is shown in the dose window. The “1” icon is equal to a full dose as stated on the pen. The volume of liquid administered is 0.6 ml no matter which pen dosage you are using.

Step 12: Insert the needle into your skin. Inject the medicine by pushing the dose knob until it stops. Then slowly count to five while holding the dose knob. The zero icon must be shown in the dose window before removing the needle from the skin.

If the dose knob is hard to push, try pushing the dose knob more slowly to make it easier to inject. Your needle may also be blocked, so put a new pen needle and prime the pen again. You may have dust, food, or liquid inside the pen, please dispose of this pen and email as at hello@myjuniper.co.uk.

Step 13: Remove the needle from your skin. A drop of medicine on the needle tip is normal. It will not affect your dose. Confirm the “0” icon is in the dose window. If you see the “0” icon in the dose window, you've received the full dose. If you don't see the zero icon in the dose window, insert the needle back into your skin and finish the injection. Don't redial the dose.

If you still don't think you've received the full dose, don't start over or repeat the injection.

Step 14: Put light pressure in the injection site.by pressing with a cotton ball or gauze. Do not rub the injection site.

Step 15: Carefully replace the outer needle shield onto the needle.

Step 16: Unscrew  the cap needle and put the needle in a sharps container. Don't store the pen with the needle attached as this can lead to leaking, the needle may get blocked, or air condense to the pen.

Step 17: Replace the pen cap. Do not store the pen without the pen cap attached.

You may store your used pen at room temperature up to 30 degrees celsius after your injection. Make sure to keep it away from heat and out of the sight and reach of children. Dispose of the pen 30 days after first using it and after using four weekly doses or once it's been out of the fridge for 30 days.
