Meet the newest treatment in medical weight loss: This dual-action treatment targets GIP and GLP-1 hormones to effectively lose weight
What is GLP-1/GIP?
This treatment is a dual-action treatment that mimics both the GIP and GLP-1 hormones, leading to increased feelings of satiation and fewer side effects than GLP-1 treatment.
How does GLP-1/GIP treatment work?
This new treatment acts on a peptide (GLP-1) and another hormone pathway called glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which promotes fat loss and blocks fat gain. By combining the effects of GLP-1 and GIP agonists together, this treatment is more effective at promoting weight loss by controlling appetite, promoting fat loss and preventing fat gain.
How effective is GLP-1/GIP treatment for weight loss?
According to clinical trials, GLP-1/GIP treatment is the most effective treatment for weight loss that is available right now.
One study¹ of over 2,500 patients from July 2022 found an average of up to 20.9% body weight loss in patients on GLP-1/GIP after 72 weeks. In the same study, up to 90.9% of patients were able to achieve at least 5% weight loss, up to 83.5% were able to achieve at least 10% weight loss and 56.7% were able to achieve at least 20% weight loss in 72 weeks of treatment.
Is GLP-1/GIP treatment more effective than other weight loss treatments?
While there are no published head-to-head trials at this stage, comparing the respective clinical trials of GLP-1/GIP treatment and a GLP-1 only treatment, the GLP-1/GIP patients reached 20.9% at 72 weeks weight-loss vs. 14.9% at 68 weeks for GLP-1 patients.

FAQs
GLP-1/GIP is a once-weekly treatment for weight loss.
By combining the effects of GIP and GLP-1 together, this treatment is more effective at promoting weight loss through decreased appetite, as well as directly impacting the pathways that lead to fat loss. This makes you feel fuller far more quickly, assists with turning down cravings and stimulates the breakdown of fat.
Other injectable weight loss treatments only act on GLP-1 receptors. GLP-1/GIP treatment acts on the GLP-1 hormone and another pathway called glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), that together promote fat loss and blocks fat gain. By combining the effects of GLP-1 and GIP agonists together, this treatment can be more effective at promoting weight loss through reduced appetite, as well as directly on the pathways that lead to fat loss while retaining lean muscle mass.
According to clinical trials, GLP-1/GIP combined is the most effective treatment for weight loss that is available right now. There have been several studies on the results of this treatment and it outperforms other GLP-1 treatments for weight loss results.
One study of over 2,500 patients from July 2022 found an average of up to 20.9% body weight loss in patients on GLP-1/GIP treatment after 72 weeks, compared to a GLP-1 treatment where average weight loss was up to 14.9% after 68 weeks.
Weight loss treatments affect everyone differently and you may experience no side effects when taking GLP-1/GIP treatment. The most common side effects experienced by patients on GLP-1/GIP treatment are similar to those experienced with other GLP-1 treatments. These can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and indigestion.
These symptoms usually subside after your body adjusts to the treatment over the first few weeks. You can reach out to Juniper’s Care Team of pharmacists at any time if you need assistance with side effect prevention and management.
Although you can take your dose whenever you want on your scheduled day, try to take it at a similar time to prevent accidentally missing a dose.
If you miss or forget your dose, it should be administered as soon as possible, provided it's within 4 days of your usual injection day.
If your next dose is more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and administer the next dose on your normal scheduled day, do not take the missed dose. Instead, wait for your regular scheduled dose day to administer it.
If it's longer than 10 days since your last dose, you may need to recommence the GLP-1/GIP treatment at a reduced dose to prevent severe side effects from occurring once you restart.
Please get in touch with our Care Team team at hello@myjuniper.co.uk so they can advise you accordingly.
The clinical recommendation of GLP-1/GIP’s titration path is 2.5mg to 10mg and is as follows:
- Weeks 1-4 = 2.5mg weekly
- Weeks 5-8 = 5mg weekly
- Weeks 9-12 = 7.5mg weekly
- Weeks 13+ = 10mg weekly
Higher doses are available where needed. Your Juniper prescriber will work with you to agree the appropriate higher dose for you.
Start with a low dosage of 2.5mg once a week and increase gradually to 5mg and then 10mg every 4 weeks.
Most will follow the dosage schedule below, but be sure to follow your individual treatment plan as it may be different:
- Week 1-4: Inject 2.5mg weekly (1 dose per week)
- Week 5-8: Inject 5mg weekly (1 dose per week)
- Week 9-12: Inject 7.5mg weekly (1 dose per week)
- Week 13+: Inject 10mg weekly (1 dose per week)
Our Care Team will maintain regular contact with you during the initial months of treatment to monitor your progress, address any side effects, and place you in touch with your prescriber to make necessary dose adjustments.
Please reach out to our Care Team at hello@myjuniper.co.uk if you wish to remain on a lower dose and we can place you in touch with your prescriber.
Higher doses of GLP-1/GIP may be available from the manufacturer, but are not suitable for everyone. Your prescriber will determine if it is appropriate to move to a higher dose.
Do not increase your dose early as this will not improve your results and will most likely lead to increased side effects.
These dosage increases are not compulsory and you should only increase your dose if you are tolerating the treatment.
Yes. Our Care Team advises that GLP-1/GIP treatment can be started 7 days after your last dose of another weight loss treatment.
However, if you are planning to miss more than 2 doses of your GLP-1/GIP treatment, you will need to recommence the treatment at a reduced dose to prevent severe side effects from occurring once you restart. In this case, please get in touch with our care team at hello@myjuniper.co.uk so they can arrange a review with your prescriber to amend your treatment plan.
The Weight Reset Programme price will vary depending on your preferred treatment and what your prescriber sees as safest and most effective based on your medical history.
Based on the standard titration schedule, GLP-1/GIP treatment through Juniper will cost:
- 2.5mg = £209
- 5mg = £209 7.5mg = £229
- 10mg = £229
The clinical recommendation of GLP-1/GIP treatment titration path is 2.5mg to 10mg. Titrating higher to 12.5mg & 15mg will be an active prescriber decision in consult once a patient is stable on 10mg.
According to clinical trials, GLP-1/GIP treatment is the most effective medication for weight loss available right now. Yes, GLP-1/GIP treatment is prescription-only. This means you can't get it over the counter and instead, have to get it prescribed by an authorised healthcare professional.
While longer-term trials for GLP-1/GIP are currently in progress, the SURMOUNT-4 trial found that those who switched to placebo found they experienced a 14% weight regain in 1 year. The behavioural and lifestyle changes you gain through Juniper's programme are designed to support your weight loss beyond medication alone. If you have any further questions on the use of this treatment, speak to your prescriber.
This medication is not currently available on the NHS for weight loss. Since these are prescription-only medicines, they aren't available over the counter. Instead, a doctor or pharmacist can prescribe GLP-1/GIP treatments, which are available through private telehealth clinics, pharmacies, and GPs across the UK.
