FAQs
Mounjaro is a once-weekly treatment for weight loss.
By combining the effects of GIP and GLP-1 together, this treatment is more effective at promoting weight loss through decreased appetite, as well as directly impacting the pathways that lead to fat loss. This makes you feel fuller far more quickly, assists with turning down cravings and stimulates the breakdown of fat.
Other injectable weight loss treatments only act on GLP-1 receptors. Mounjaro acts on the GLP-1 hormone and another pathway called glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), that together promote fat loss and blocks fat gain. By combining the effects of GLP-1 and GIP agonists together, this weight loss medication can be more effective at promoting weight loss through reduced appetite, as well as directly on the pathways that lead to fat loss while retaining lean muscle mass.
Mounjaro usually starts working within the first few weeks of treatment, and many women start noticing changes in appetite and a decrease in food noise during this time. By week 3, patients may start noticing weight loss, though individual results may vary [1]. For the best outcomes, it’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s guidance and lead a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
Weight loss results vary depending on factors like your starting weight, eating habits, exercise routine, and overall health. However, according to clinical trials, the average weight loss by week 4 is about 4% of the starting body weight.[1] Keep in mind that sustainable, long-term weight loss is the goal, and rapid changes might not always be healthy.
Mounjaro is incredibly effective for weight loss, but adjusting your lifestyle is key to achieving results you can maintain in the long run. Your food choices play a huge part in this. Including whole foods, lean proteins, and high-fibre foods in your meal plan helps control hunger and supports digestion. You should also avoid processed foods and sugary snacks to avoid unnecessary calorie intake. Then, there’s the exercise component. Whether you're performing strength training, cardio, or flexibility workouts, you‘ll help your body burn calories and maintain lean muscle mass.
But weight loss isn't just about diet and exercise. Sleep is another factor to consider — and getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep helps regulate your hunger hormones and metabolism. Mindful eating and meditation have also been shown to reduce cortisol levels — the stress hormone that contributes to weight gain.
According to clinical trials, GLP-1/GIP combined is the most effective treatment for weight loss that is available right now. There have been several studies on the results of this treatment and it outperforms other GLP-1 treatments for weight loss results.
One study of over 2,500 patients from July 2022 found an average of up to 20.9% body weight loss in patients on GLP-1/GIP treatment after 72 weeks, compared to a GLP-1 treatment where average weight loss was up to 14.9% after 68 weeks.[1]
If you feel Mounjaro isn’t delivering the expected results, don’t worry — it happens. Weight loss journeys are deeply personal and can take time. We recommend speaking with your healthcare provider to evaluate your progress and adjust your treatment plan and/or suggest lifestyle changes, if needed.
