Frequently asked questions
Weight loss injections, more scientifically known as GLP-1 injections, are medications that target GLP-1 receptors and are clinically proven to support weight loss.
Though there are many different weight loss injections, they all tend to have a similar mechanism of action. They work by mimicking natural gut hormones, GLP-1, which help control appetite, hunger, and feelings of fullness. This helps reduce food cravings and noise, leading to weight loss.
While the effectiveness may vary depending on the weight loss injection, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is proven to support significant long-term weight loss. A 36-week clinical trial involving 783 patients across four countries achieved an average weight loss of over 20% of their body weight. An additional 88-week clinical trial with 806 patients achieved an average weight loss of over 25% of their body weight. All patients received lifestyle and physical activity counselling and followed a reduced-calorie diet during the trial.
There are three weight loss injections licensed by the government’s MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) for weight loss and the treatment of obesity: Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Saxenda. Mounjaro is currently being trialed by the NHS for a select group of participants with a BMI over 40 and three separate health conditions.
Because weight loss injections contribute to weight loss, the long-term effects of the medication are largely positive, as they can help you lead a healthier lifestyle. Some of the long-term effects include:
Sustained weight loss: Weight loss injections can lead to significant weight loss, which improves heart health, cholesterol levels, and reduces obesity-related risks.
Improved metabolic health: Better insulin sensitivity can lower your risk of diabetes.
Before using weight loss injections, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects and precautions. Rest assured, any side effects are usually mild and tend to occur when you first start the medication or increase your dose, as your body adjusts to it.
The most common side effects are:
Loss of appetite
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhoea or constipation
Headaches or dizziness
Abdominal pain
Fatigue
Burping and flatulence
Irritation, itching, or bruising around the injection site
At Juniper, you can contact a prescribing clinician at any time to assist with any side effects that may arise.
Many people feel reduced appetite in weeks and see noticeable weight loss, typically 2-3kg, in the first month. The average Juniper patient will see 13% weight loss within 4 months.
We offer only medications that are licensed for weight loss. However, we do offer Wegovy to eligible patients, which is manufactured by the same company, Novo Nordisk, and uses the same active ingredient, semaglutide, to suppress appetite. Wegovy is licensed for treating obesity in the UK and offers higher dosages of 1.7mg and 2.4mg of semaglutide, compared to Ozempic’s 1mg. The higher dosage supports greater weight loss.
